From Calling to Faithful Influence

In my last post, I introduced a simple but powerful idea: Great leaders don’t fit inside the box. They are formed outside of it.
But that raises an important question: If leadership isn’t about fitting a mold…then how is leadership actually developed?
Over time, through both personal experience and leadership work with others, I’ve come to see that leadership formation follows a pattern.
Not a rigid formula—but a recognizable movement.
It is a process that shows up again and again in the lives of leaders who create lasting impact.
I call it:

Every meaningful leadership journey begins with a sense of calling. Not necessarily a dramatic moment—but a growing awareness that your leadership matters…that you are part of something larger than yourself.
Calling answers the question: Why does this work matter?
Without calling, leadership becomes performance.
With calling, leadership becomes purpose-driven.
Limitation: Where Leadership Gets Real
Calling quickly encounters limitation. This is the moment many leaders struggle because limitation feels like disqualification.
- Not enough experience
- Not enough confidence
- Not enough clarity
But limitation is not the end of leadership…it is the beginning of honest leadership.
Limitation forces leaders to:
- ask for help
- rethink assumptions
- grow beyond self-reliance
This is where leadership becomes real.
Formation: The Shaping of the Leader
If limitation is embraced rather than avoided, something deeper begins to happen.
Formation.
This is where leadership moves beyond skill and into character. Leaders are shaped through:
- humility
- perseverance
- reflection
- dependence
Formation is not fast. It is not always visible. But it is what gives leadership depth, resilience, and credibility.
Faithful Influence: Leadership That Multiplies
The final movement of leadership is not self-focused.
It is outward.
Faithful influence is not about building personal success. It is about investing in others…Developing leaders…Empowering teams…Creating cultures where people grow.
This is where leadership multiplies.
Transformational Leadership Reconsidered
Much of what we call transformational leadership focuses on outcomes:
vision
change
influence
But true transformation begins earlier. It begins with the formation of the leader.
When leaders are shaped through calling, limitation, and formation, their influence becomes:
- more authentic
- more sustainable
- more impactful
Why This Framework Matters
In today’s leadership environment, many leaders feel pressure to perform…To appear confident…To have answers…To lead without hesitation.
But beneath that pressure, there is often:
uncertainty
fatigue
self-doubt
This framework offers a different path. Not one of performance—but of formation. Not one of pretending—but of becoming.
